A great way to stay in contact with your existing customers and attract new ones is through a blog.

What is a blog?

A blog is a publishing vehicle that allows you to create an entry consisting of text, audio, photos and/or video, and publish it online. Blog entries typically appear in reverse chronological order so people see your latest entry first.

Blogs can be published as stand-alone websites or on a page within an established website. Most often, your blog will be part of your company's website. This allows "stickiness," or the ability to keep traffic on your website.

Why blog?

Blogging is popular for its low cost and ease of use. It has boomed as a business tool for many reasons, including:

  • Building relationships Potential and existing customers will be attracted to informative, value-added content.
  • Enhancing search engine optimization (SEO) A blog is a great place to use keywords and help raise your ranking in search engine results.
  • Educating customers Blogging is a very effective way to communicate the value you provide while positioning yourself as an industry expert.
  • Monitoring comments Blogs can allow reader comments providing vital feedback.

Creating a blog

The easiest way to start blogging is to use a blog hosting vendor, such as Blogger, TypePad and WordPress. Hosted blogging services let you build and update your blog via a website, so you can update your blog with only Internet access and a web browser.

If you want more control and the ability to integrate your blog with an existing website, you'll need an installed blogging application. Companies providing these tools include WordPress (installed version), Movable Type and b2evolution.

Prior to any blogging publication, seek the legal advice of your brokerage to be certain you're compliant with federal and state regulations.
